Are You Living Someone Else’s Life?

Have you ever looked at your life and wondered how much of it you actually chose? We inherit ideas about what a successful life is supposed to look like. The right career. The promotion. The house. The money. The respectable ambitions. And slowly, almost invisibly, a collection of perfectly reasonable decisions can turn into a life we never consciously decided to live. The strange thing is, that life might not even be bad. It just might not feel entirely yours. In this video, I think about authenticity, ambition, creativity, and the quiet ways we begin living according to other people’s expectations. Not because someone forced us to—but because it can be remarkably difficult to separate what we genuinely want from what we’ve learned we’re supposed to want. Maybe finding your way back doesn’t require quitting your job, abandoning your responsibilities, or moving to Florence because your authentic self has apparently decided to become a ceramicist. Maybe it begins with a much smaller question: Would you still want this if nobody could see you having it? And perhaps there is no dramatic path back to your own life. Perhaps you make the path by choosing it. One decision at a time.
