Dental companies pour time and money into new products, and many still struggle to catch on. Michael Ventriello and Mark Ross say the reason often has less to do with the technology than with how it’s explained.
In this episode of the Dental Trade Alliance podcast, host Kevin Henry talks with Ventriello and Ross, co-founders of Personify Group and fellow DTA members, about why promising innovations stall. Ross has spent about 40 years in dental marketing, and Ventriello came from computer software and hardware, working on dental technology as CAD/CAM and digital radiography emerged.
The first problem, Ventriello says, is leading with features. Practitioners need to see right away how a product helps them and their patients, whether that means the bottom line, a simpler workflow or less burden on the team. Ross adds that features must become value, tied to a simple, ownable brand story. A product that does many things for many audiences risks losing focus on where to start.
Ventriello also notes that the best product doesn’t always win. He points to VHS and Betamax: Sony’s format was widely seen as superior, but VHS prevailed with a lower price and a tape that held a full movie.
On competition, Ross says companies should assess not just direct rivals but alternatives, and the friction of changing workflows and retraining staff. “People don’t like change, even when it’s good,” he says, and proof and authority are how a newcomer earns a switch. Ventriello adds that authority matters even more in AI search, where tools draw on published articles, white papers and third-party validation.
AI gets blunt treatment. Ross says a trade show can have 10 “all-in-one” software solutions, which makes it hard for a buyer to find the one reason to change, and he argues that “AI” is a feature, not a selling point. Ventriello calls the current glut of AI products “dentistry’s dot-com bubble.”
Their go-to-market checklist:
• Confirm the problem is real.
• Build a brand story and a clear unique selling proposition.
• Choose priority customers and channels.
• Develop a repeatable sales story.
• Follow the customer’s natural path to purchase.
