All four selectable shots in the new Touhou 6 remake, finished on the highest difficulty, no continues! I apologise for some pretty sloppy gameplay at times: I recorded a lot of these while getting the final achievement (seeing every spell card in the game), which means that I was about 7 hours of fatigue deep into an all-day Endurance session doing these.
"Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic - the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil" is the first ever official remake of a Touhou game, bringing Touhou 6 to the modern era with official localisation for many languages, new graphics and small tweaks for modern sensibilities, like achievements, Spell Practice, an infinite lives mode, a visible hitbox for the playable characters and circular hitboxes for all the bullets similar to modern Touhou titles.
There are many other small changes scattered throughout the game too, like slight balancing tweaks and a new stage section getting added to the end of Stage 3, for some reason. It also comes bundled with the original version, adapted to work natively on modern systems, if you don't care for any of the changes here.
Of course, the biggest change to the New Classic version is present in the Extra stage, check out my previous video showcasing it here: • [Steam] Touhou 6 NEW CLASSIC - EXTRA PERFE...
Otherwise, this is just like the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil of old: pick between Reimu or Marisa, with two Shot choices each, and dodge and shoot 'em up through 6 Stages as you meet some of the most iconic characters and tunes of the 2000s. Beat the game on Normal or higher without using a continue and you'll unlock an additional Extra stage you can select separately from the main campaign, with fixed difficulty and a very long boss to beat. With 4 selectable difficulties, players of all skill levels can have fun here, however just like the original, you cannot play Stage 6 nor unlock the Extra stage through Easy which is unfortunate. With drastic nerfs to the most dangerous bullet types and even a few key patterns, this is a much easier game than the original it seems, so don't be afraid to move up the difficulty ladder and use the "Challenge" mode for a smoother learning experience if you're not quite comfortable with those yet.
If you're a brand new or casual fan and have never had an opportunity to play Touhou 6 before, this is an incredible opportunity to familiarise yourself with one of the most legendary indie games of all time, offering a very convenient package to play a pretty, accessible and modernised take on the game, while keeping virtually everything that matters. If you're already an established fan of Touhou who has access to a working copy of the original, however, the value proposition here is a bit tougher to gauge. It's down to how much you value the new graphics and music, the somewhat more streamlined modern gameplay and the tiny bit of rebalanced and added content relative to the asking price... because this is, admittedly, pretty expensive for a very straightforward remake of a 24 year old game. It's up to you to decide that.
