Motivational interviewing is an evidence-based, conversation model for evoking and enhancing intrinsic motivation to change behaviors. In this video-conversation, participants will discuss the core components of this model and practice using the skills of Motivational Interviewing, particularly in the context of substance use behavior change(s).
This interactive live training marked the first session of a three-part series on Motivational Interviewing (MI). Participants explored the foundational principles of MI and discussed its value and application in their work, sharing perspectives on why the approach is effective in supporting behavior change.
A significant portion of the discussion focused on the OARS communication techniques—Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflections, and Summaries. Through discussion and practical examples, participants examined the distinction between employing OARS as general communication skills and applying them within the broader spirit and framework of Motivational Interviewing.
