The Dark Story of the Virginia State Colony — The Asylum Behind America's Forced Sterilizations

In 1927, the United States Supreme Court ruled 8-1 that the government could forcibly sterilize its own citizens. The case was called Buck v. Bell. The woman at the center of it was Carrie Buck, a 21-year-old committed to the Virginia State Colony for Epileptics and Feebleminded after becoming pregnant from an assault. She wasn't intellectually disabled. She wasn't a threat to anyone. She was poor, unmarried, and pregnant in 1920s Virginia. Her defense attorney was a former board member of the institution that wanted to sterilize her. He called no witnesses. The trial was rigged from the start. Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. wrote the majority opinion and delivered the nine words that would echo across the century: "Three generations of imbeciles are enough." What followed was over fifty years of forced sterilizations at a sprawling campus on a hillside in Madison Heights, Virginia. Roughly 8,000 Virginians were sterilized between 1927 and 1979. Many were teenagers. Many were told they were having their appendix removed. The ruling that authorized it all has never been formally overturned. This documentary covers the complete history of the Virginia Colony: its founding as a segregation institution for the "unfit," the eugenics movement that built it, the rigged Supreme Court case that gave it legal power, the thousands of lives it destroyed, the survivors who spoke out decades later, the Nuremberg trial where Nazi doctors cited America's own ruling in their defense, and the belated reckoning that came too late for almost everyone it owed.
