Best known for playing Mikey Duffy in River City for 156 episodes and as a familiar face in Glasgow's King's Theatre's pantomime, Darren is now bringing the acclaimed one-man play Crocodile Rock to the Edinburgh Fringe. The conversation begins with a surprisingly passionate debate about falling in love with Marks and Spencers fashion, and the worst shoes ever made, before diving headfirst into 90s and 00s fashion nostalgia. Darren and Alice get into school style must-haves to the nicknames Darren picked up along the way, including "Darren Broon-shoes" and, more recently, "DD" (Double Denim). Beyond the fashion, Darren opens up about the deeply personal connection he has to Crocodile Rock. Written by Scottish playwright Andy McGregor, the play explores what it was like growing up gay on a Scottish island in the 1990s - and being saved by a Spanish drag queen. Darren shares how his own experiences of growing up gay in Paisley during the era of Section 28 helped inspire the story.
