It has an area of 7.12 square miles and a population of 38,170. It is separated from the mainland of south Essex by a network of creeks. Canvey is the site of the world's first marine terminal for imported liquefied natural gas (1959); those storage facilities were later used for liquefied petroleum gas. Thorney Bay beach is a small, sheltered sandy beach on Canvey Island. To the rear of the beach is a large flat grassy area with a play park, ideal when the kids have had enough of making sand castles .
