Top 5 Races I’ve Witnessed Live

The Top 5 Races I Have Witnessed Live #5 Winx QLD Oaks The second win in her world record breaking sequence of wins. Remarkably she was $5 this day. Nobody knew what was to come, 4 Cox Plates Later she was a champion. #4 Makybe Diva Memsie Stakes This one is a bit self indulgent. I got $10 on her this day as Regal Roller was almost unbeatable at Caulfield and Makybe was first up after a Japan Cup tilt. She motored this day, remarkable win which set up a campaign of a Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup win. #3 Black Caviar - BTC Stakes Moods brought her back to his home state. She wasn’t at her best this day and Hay List was no slouch but to see her in the flesh was something special. #2 Lonhro Australian Cup This race has been mythologised a bit. We watched it on the outside rail at the 100m. I had him in doubles, trebles, everything. The video doesn’t do it justice how bad the interference was, he went down on his nose. Beadman could have eased around them and would have won easily but he went for the miracle run. The horse was a champion and showed it that day. Also the owners of Delzao had shut a door in my face earlier on in the day, so that made it all the sweeter, never heard a louder crowd on a race course than that day, but it still was not the most remarkable win I’ve seen live - #1 Rough Habit - 1992 Stradbroke Handicap Was in the stands as a young kid. He had top weight, outside barrier and had to run down Schillaci who had won the triple crown in Melbourne as a three year old. Jimmy always said he was the only horse he rode who actually accelerated when going for inside runs. He was a kiwi, but as Queensland as Alfie Langer. The crowd roared and lit a fire in me that still rages today. I doubt I’ll ever see another run like it.
