Daily Driving a 1930 Model A Failed So They EV Swapped It.

Driving a 1930 Ford Model A EV conversion built by Flashdrive Motors. The car gets a Hyper 9 motor, 26 kWh pack, and over 100 miles of range around town. This is a 1930 Model A five window coupe converted to electric. Pure simplicity, the startup sequence is turn the key, drop the park brake, and go. It drives like an automatic because it stays in third gear, which is 1 to 1 direct drive straight from the motor to the rear end. The stock Model A three speed transmission is still in the car. You can still shift it if you want, and you still have to double clutch to do it, since these have no synchronizers. There is a clutch switch that cuts regen while you shift, a detail I appreciated after driving plenty of manual EVs. Before the conversion this car was a daily driving experiment that failed. James's dad, a Ford mechanic since the 1960s, tried driving it to work for a week and popped a head gasket before the week was done. On a stock Model A you are managing timing and mixture with levers on the steering column while you drive, and running it too lean or too far advanced is how head gaskets go. Now the car has close to a thousand miles on it and gets driven regularly. Details covered in the drive: charging through a NACS port hidden under the radiator cap, level 1 and level 2 charging with an overnight fill even on 110 volts, a 26 kWh prismatic pack roughly equivalent to five Tesla modules, and an Orion BMS. This is version three of the Flashdrive Model A kit, and a mechanically inclined person can typically do the install in a few weeks. The suspension is stock. The conversion is aimed at people who want to keep driving these cars, not people who want to rebuild them.
