Traoré Built a Gold Refinery: Could Jamaica Do the Same With Bauxite? Burkina Faso has opened its first national gold refinery, Raffinor-BF, as Ibrahim Traoré pushes to keep more mining value at home. But Jamaica has bauxite—one of the key minerals behind aluminium—so could it follow a similar resource-sovereignty strategy? In this video, we compare Burkina Faso’s gold refinery with Jamaica’s bauxite and alumina industry. We explain what Traoré’s refinery actually does, why bauxite processing is far more difficult than gold refining, and whether Jamaica could keep more value from its natural resources. We also break down the difference between bauxite, alumina and aluminium, the huge electricity demands of aluminium smelting, and the environmental and financial risks Jamaica would face. This is not a claim that Jamaica can simply copy Burkina Faso. Gold refining and bauxite processing are completely different industrial challenges. But both countries face the same question: should a resource-rich nation export raw materials, or build more processing, jobs, technology and profits at home?
