late Professor Stanley Wijesundera was an internationally renowned visionary educationalist, Humanist with a Pasion for agriculture. Born in the foothills of the temple of the tooth relics in Amptiya , Kandy on 6th December 1923 Professor Stanley Wijesundera was brought up at Meewatura. He had his early education at Dharmarajha College. Trinity and Ananda College.Thereafter he was awarded degrees in Chemistry from University of Ceylon and University of London. Subsequently he was awarded a PhD in BioChemistry from Oxford University, He served the University of Ceylon for many decades. Having started his career as a lecturer He ascended to the post Professor of Biochemistry after many decades. He was bestowed the Honour of being the founding Vice Chancellor of The University of Colombo which post he served for the longest tenure of a Vice Chancellor for over 11 years. He made a unique contribution for capacity and institution building in terms of not only converting the university which was then mainly filled with temporary huts into most of what it is today with world class building’s which even 33 years after his untimely demise are living testimony to his devotion and dedication to the University. He did a mini revolution of university education at that time by introducing pioneering new education subjects such computing, business studies, finance and biotechnology and pioneered and established self sustaining and fee charging Institutes such as University of Colombo Computing Studies (UCCS). He also started self sustaining Masters in Business Adminiatration (MBA) and executive MBA for employed executives . business and Initiated Collaboration with many European Universities where professors from Abroad taught Sri Lankan students in subjects such as Economics and Biotechnology. He also guided the founding of North Colombo Medical College (NCMC) by granting Colombo university recognition to NCMC and he helped start the Ragama Teaching Hospital from students families contribution to enable NCMC to have a teaching hospital, This was the first fee levying Medical College in Sri Lanka. Professor Wijesundera was assassinated by a asaaain Ranasinghe whilst helping his successor Vice Chancellor G L Pieris in an office located on the same floor as the Vice chancellors office at Colombo University College house.
