In this live studio session just months before the end -- for the final time in their original run -- the band was locked together in perfect harmony. A landmark high fidelity document of the most titanic band of the 90s at their thundering protean peak, flashing over the precipice. The most indrawn band turning further inward and effortlessly eclipsing the neon glitz of the MTV production. These are the finest live performances of these tracks. In total, one of the greatest performances in rock history, particularly Cornell. 00:00 BURDEN IN MY HAND (best live version) 04:52 SPOONMAN (best live version) 09:02 BLOW UP THE OUTSIDE WORLD (one of the finest performances by any band ever) 14:48 MAILMAN (best live version) 19:22 BLACK HOLE SUN (best live version) Chris Cornell, v/g Kim Thayil, g Ben Shepherd, b Matt Cameron, d MTV Studios, London, Sep 14, 1996 ____________________________________________________________ Technical Notes: VIDEO: The source was 500p including letterbox bars which cut the actual resolution to about 400p. I've upscaled it about 2800% (240k to 7M pixels). The aggressively distorted photography includes every effect ever invented: hyper exposure, hyper contrast, hyper saturation, zooms, pans, epileptic flashes, fuzz. This was a delicate process. The wider shots are a bit rough, there is no way around that. Overall it's the best it's ever looked. Also patched a small static white MTV icon in the upper right. The patch is an improvement. I am not Weta Workshop and do not have the capacity to produce a frame by frame generative AI restoration for a watermark. It's been pillarboxed to ensure VP9 Youtube codec. Regarding the AUDIO: This performance of “Blow Up the Outside World” was officially released on cd compilations in much better sound probably from the master. This was a useful benchmark for the rest of the audio. This official audio has never before been married to the video. Though this official track is in better fidelity it's also more compressed. I used iZotope's “EQ Match” to align with the officially released track and slightly boosted the mids. The mix now has more weight. This is the best it's ever sounded. While the unreleased audio isn't perfect it's not far off, and the full sequence is more consistent.
