When Britain left India, it owed India more than a billion pounds. So why did the empire really leave in 1947?
Was it Gandhi's mass protests, a war that left Britain broke, a navy mutiny and rebel-army trials that shook Britain's confidence in its own forces, or a new government in London? We look at each cause, give both nationalist and revisionist historians their strongest case, and end with the rushed partition and its human cost, told calmly and with sourced ranges.
