A Northern Soul and Motown free community event on the Market Square in Kirkham, Lancashire, UK The term "Northern Soul" emerged from the British club scene in the late 1960s and early 1970s. 🎵 So what actually makes a record "Northern Soul"? This is where it gets interesting. Northern Soul isn't really a genre in the conventional sense. It's more about how a record was adopted and used by the Northern Soul scene. A record could be obscure American soul, Motown, R&B or something quite different stylistically. If Northern Soul DJs and dancers embraced it, it could become a Northern Soul classic. That's why you'll find records from artists who never had mainstream success alongside famous names. And there's an important connection to Motown, which is particularly relevant to the Soul on the Square events you've been working on. Early Northern Soul DJs were heavily influenced by Motown's energetic sound, but as collectors dug deeper, they increasingly sought lesser-known and rarer American releases. 🕺 The Northern English twist What really made the movement unique was the dancing and DJ culture that developed around the music. All-night sessions, record collecting, distinctive dance moves, badges, soul scarves and fiercely competitive DJ culture became part of the identity.
