Capnometry is the measurement of carbon dioxide (CO2) in a sample of gas. Capnography is the continuous monitoring of the concentration or partial pressure of CO2 in respiratory gases. This is represented in a graphical form, with time on the X-axis and expired partial pressure of CO2 on the Y-axis: the result is a capnography trace or waveform. The end tidal CO2 is the maximal partial pressure or concentration of CO2 in the respiratory gases at the end of an exhaled breath. A capnometry monitor displays the ET CO2 value alone, where as a capnography monitor displays the ET CO2 value plus a continuous capnography waveform.
