Historical Background Work on the vehicle began under the AR/AAV (Armored Reconnaissance/Airborne Assault Vehicle) project in January 1959. In June 1962, the Cadillac Motor Car Division delivered the first prototype vehicle to the customer. The first generation of vehicles included three prototypes. Work continued, and the vehicle eventually entered service as the M551 Sheridan in 1966.
