Somebody hands you a bucket of popcorn that was popped a week ago. You take a piece. It's stale. You say so out loud. You rate it, on a form, as worse than fresh. And then you keep eating it for the next ninety minutes. That happened, in a real experiment, and the people who did it were not the greedy ones or the distracted ones. They were the ones with the strongest popcorn habit. They could taste it perfectly well. It changed nothing about their hands. Move those same people into a meeting room and the stale popcorn suddenly matters again. Nothing about them changed. Their palate didn't improve. Their willpower didn't arrive. They were moved to a room with the wrong chairs. Which is the whole thing. A habit is not a stored intention or a small determined version of you kept somewhere in reserve. What repetition builds is a link from a situation to an action — and the link is anchored to the situation, not to the person. Take the room away and there is nothing left for it to fire on. So the six weeks of running that stopped didn't stop because you ran out of discipline. You changed shifts, and the run was living in the eight o'clock gap between waking and leaving. And a chair can be moved back, or moved somewhere better, which is a very different problem from being a different person. #insightfulsnippets #psychology #habits
