How can nuclear safety be ensured in conditions of war?

Nuclear power and nuclear security are in the spotlight this week as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) holds its annual conference in Vienna. With wars in Ukraine and Iran raising concerns over nuclear safety, the gathering is set to focus on how to protect nuclear facilities in conflict zones and keep nuclear material under international safeguards. The conference is taking place without Iran’s top nuclear official, Mohammad Eslami, as he is subject to an international travel ban under UN sanctions reinstated on Iran last year.  With global nuclear capacity expected to triple by 2060, what are the key challenges facing the organisation and how can it ensure effective nuclear governance? Guests: Tariq Rauf Former Head of Nuclear Verification and Security Policy Coordination at the IAEA Gaukhar Mukhatzhanova Japan Chair for a World without Nuclear Weapons Ali Vaez Iran Project Director at the International Crisis Group #NuclearSafety #IAEA #TheNewsmakers
