The Silicon Valley Bank collapse took one day: on March 9, 2023, customers pulled about $42 billion — and another $100 billion was lined up for Friday morning. How does a $209 billion bank fail on the safest investments on Earth? We follow the paper trail, page by page. SVB was the bank of the startup world. Between early 2020 and the end of 2021 its deposits roughly tripled, from about $62 billion to about $189 billion. In this investigation we open four pages of the ledger: the flood of deposits; the "held to maturity" drawer holding about $91 billion of long-term Treasuries and government-backed mortgage bonds, carrying more than $15 billion of unrealized losses against roughly $16 billion of equity; the interest rate swaps the bank unwound in 2022 (about $11 billion, booking roughly $517 million in gains) until only about $563 million of protection remained; and the 31 unaddressed supervisory findings the Federal Reserve later counted — about triple similar banks. We explain why rising rates sink old bonds with a simple apartment-lease example, then walk through the last 48 hours: the March 8 announcement of a $21 billion bond sale and a $1.8 billion loss, the Moody's downgrade, a share price down about 60%, group chats and a run that needed no line — just an app and a button. SVB ended Thursday with a negative cash balance of nearly $1 billion, and California regulators closed it on Friday, March 10, 2023. Then the aftermath: the systemic risk exception that protected every depositor, the closure of Signature Bank, the Fed's emergency lending program at face value, the bankruptcy of SVB Financial Group, the FDIC's estimated cost of about $20 billion, and the Fed's own review calling it "a textbook case of mismanagement." In January 2025 the FDIC sued 17 former officers and directors, alleging gross negligence; the former executives dispute the claims, a federal judge allowed the case to proceed in October 2025, and no court has ruled on the merits. As of our check in November 2026, no SVB executive has been charged with a crime. Finally, the channel's own analysis: the risk was never hidden — it sat in a footnote. Safe is not the same as liquid. Should every bank deposit be insured, no matter the size? Tell us in the comments.
