The Katadyn BeFree is light and fast. A Steripen handles a different set of problems. But when I am heading into new country, bringing multiple people, or I am not completely confident in the water source, the MSR HyperFlow Microfilter is the one I reach for. In this review, I break down the MSR HyperFlow Microfilter’s specs, flow rate, hollow-fiber filter system, and why it works in places where a bottle-based filter starts to struggle. I show the ideal one-litre Nalgene and six-litre DromLite setup, how to filter water from shallow seeps and swampy sources with the pre-filter, and the real reason this system is so versatile for backcountry hunting. I also show you how to prevent the common slowdown problem. If your HyperFlow has been dry for a while, pre-soak it.
