The conference “The Climate We Live In. An Alliance Against the Far Right.” took place in the run-up to the European elections in June 2024. Two months earlier, members of the European Alliance of Academies send a clear signal against the resurgence of right-wing extremism, antisemitism and racism. The members of the European Alliance of Academies, initiated by Akademie der Künste president Jeanine Meerapfel, have been standing together for the freedom of art since 2020. The conference focused on artists from various European countries affected by repression. They bring their art to the European public and pass on their experiences to political decision-makers. At the opening on Monday, 25 March, after a welcoming address by Jeanine Meerapfel, president of Akademie der Künste, and address by Minister of State for Culture and the Media Claudia Roth, publicist and historian Meron Mendel speaks about the debate on artistic freedom in Germany. Manos Tsangaris shares his thoughts on the topic of “Democracy and Music”. On the subsequent panel, moderated by Valerio Rocco Lozano, representatives of the Hungarian and Polish art and cultural scene (Anna Maria Potocka and Jákob Ladányi Jancsó) discuss the possibilities to participate in democratic processes. Aleš Šteger and Iban García del Blanco comment on the political and social climate in Europe against the backdrop of the 2024 European elections.
