Archaeologists Found Clues Around Roanoke Island That Don’t Match What Most People Know
The Lost Colony of Roanoke has been called one of America’s greatest historical mysteries for more than four centuries. But archaeological evidence around Roanoke Island suggests the story may be far more complicated than a colony that simply vanished.
In 1587, more than one hundred English men, women, and children settled on Roanoke Island in what is now North Carolina. Among them was Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the Americas.
Three years later, Governor John White returned to find the settlement abandoned.
There were no bodies. No obvious signs of violence. No distress signal.
Only one word remained:
CROATOAN.
In this documentary, we examine what archaeology, historical records and the landscape itself reveal about the Lost Colony of Roanoke.
We explore evidence found on Hatteras Island, once known as Croatoan, where sixteenth-century English objects have been recovered alongside later Native deposits — evidence some archaeologists believe may support the theory that at least some colonists relocated and lived among the Croatoan people.
But the Lost Colony is only one layer of Roanoke Island’s story.
We travel backward through the Civil War Battle of Roanoke Island and the Freedmen’s Colony, the Indigenous communities who lived here centuries before Europeans arrived, ancient pottery found on the island, prehistoric dugout canoes discovered nearby, and finally the Paleo-Indian world that existed before Roanoke Island itself had fully formed.
Twelve thousand years ago, the shoreline was tens of kilometers farther east and the Outer Banks as we know them today did not yet exist.
Roanoke Island has changed, disappeared and reformed before.
And today, erosion and rising seas are once again reshaping the same coastline where the Lost Colony mystery began.
So what really happened to the Roanoke colonists?
Did they relocate peacefully and join the Croatoan community — or does something darker explain the abandoned settlement?
This documentary follows the evidence as far as it can honestly take us.
