If you are over 50 and your dog has suddenly become your shadow, following you from kitchen to bathroom to bedroom, I know where your mind goes first.
You wonder if he knows something you do not. You wonder if he is trying to tell you that you are sick. And then you feel guilty for even thinking it.
I am Maya Paulsen, and in this video I walk you through what is really happening when an older dog never leaves your side, using Linda and her 10 year old golden Murphy as our example. We go through retirement and working from home, an emptier house, your slower pace and more time on the couch, his fading hearing and eyesight and stiff joints, and how smell and long term stress can tie you together. I will show you the simple settling test I use to tell comfort shadowing from worry, when new clinginess plus pacing, panting, or nighttime restlessness needs a vet visit, and the small routine and home changes that help you both relax again.
If this helps you read your senior dog with less worry, please like this video and subscribe to Maya Paulsen Pet Psychology for weekly dog and cat behavior psychology, training as applied psychology, and choosing the right pet for your life.
Studies and resources mentioned in this video
Queens University Belfast 2022 study where trained dogs detected human stress in breath and sweat samples with nearly 94 percent accuracy. Swedish study measuring stress hormones in hair of dogs and owners showing long term stress can mirror between them, mentioned in a previous episode. Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia 2012 study on human body odor across age groups, finding ordinary people could identify the scent of the oldest group and rated it as less unpleasant. Plus years of applied clinical observation from shelter and behavior cases, including senior hearing checks, hand signal training, and home comfort changes.
