Emerson Lake & Powell Live: 09/16/1986 Mansfield, Massachusetts Great Woods Performing Arts Center

Featured on this video are Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Cozy Powell playing the musical mix listed below of 1986 ELPowell new album tracks as well as lots of Emerson Lake & Palmer pieces going back to 1970. This September 16, 1986 concert is from the Great Woods Performing Arts Center in Mansfield, Massachusetts in front of a very appreciative audience. As noted in the taper geek notes provided at bottom, this magnificent audience recording was done by Barry Rogoff. Also added to this post are three bonus tracks from the August 15, 1986 El Paso, Texas opening date of ELPowell's 1986 tour which were only played for the first few shows and then dropped from the setlist. These three songs (The Miracle, Love Blind and Step Aside) were not played again during the 1986 campaign. Having these three tracks in this compilation offers live recordings of all but one of the Emerson, Lake & Powell album's studio cuts (Lay Down Your Guns). British Progressive Rock keyboard legend Keith Emerson and vocalist/guitarist/bassist/composer Greg Lake had formerly worked with the drum god Carl Palmer since their 1970 debut. The trio churned out prog masterpieces like 1971's Tarkus, a great 1972 effort titled Trilogy, their 1973 masterpiece Brain Salad Surgery and then the double-album Works Vol. I which featured three sides of solo projects and a fourth side of group recordings. After attempting to tour North America in 1977 with an unaffordable 60 piece orchestra to support their new Works album, the band pitched it and limped along on the road as a power trio through a March 1978 tour finale. Under record company pressure, the band produced and released their career nadir Love Beach album in November 1978. No supporting tour was mounted and ELP at that point all decided to pursue separate musical paths. Various solo efforts and tours ensued by Carl Palmer and Greg Lake while Keith Emerson composed film soundtracks. In 1982 Carl Palmer joined with vocalist/bassist John Wetton from King Crimson and guitarist Steve Howe and keyboardist Geoff Downes from Yes and formed the commercial phenomenon and supergroup named Asia. The E and L of ELP auditioned for a new percussionist and, fortuitously, offered their band's drum spot to Cozy Powell who brought along his surname's P and an amazing wealth of talent and experience with such bands as The Jeff Beck Group, Rainbow and Whitesnake. Cozy Powell's drum technique was quite different than Carl Palmer's but, as you'll hear on this September 16, 1986 Massachusetts show, it powered the band's strong new material as well as gusting fierce wind into the sails of the setlist's warships.
