In this episode, I had a great conversation with Mike Beggs and Ben Burgis about their excellent new book The Blueprint: How Socialism Can Work in the Real World. At the center of this text is a deep engagement with scholarly and political debates about the role of markets, worker cooperatives, and state ownership and planning as well as the historical case studies that inform their proposed mix between them. It is a sincere, thoughtful and occasionally witty attempt to develop a plan that could be implemented as soon as we manage to expropriate the expropriators. We touched on many of its central features in the conversation, but there is much more to explore and debate in the book itself https://jacobin.com/store/product/the... Mike Beggs is senior lecturer in political economy at the University of Sydney. His research focuses on the history of macroeconomic and monetary thinking and policy. Ben Burgis is a Jacobin columnist, an adjunct philosophy professor at Rutgers University, and the host of the YouTube show and podcast Give Them an Argument. Bhaskar Sunkara is the president of the Nation magazine, founder and editorial director of Jacobin, and the author of The Socialist Manifesto: The Case for Radical Politics in an Era of Extreme Inequality. Breaking Culture Live is a Cultural Studies Association affiliated program hosted by Past President Sean Johnson Andrews. Every Wednesday we spend our lunch hour breaking down the breaking news with cultural studies scholars and activists, discussing their work and how it helps us understand a contemporary event or emergent trend and intervene in making the world a better place.
