This video features two very different lamps with the same very common failure. Both of them have catastrophically overheated. I am not entirely sure why the BC22 bulb failed so dramatically, the poor thermal contact from the PCB to the metal heat sink would cause overheating of the LEDs but not the plastic to melt, so clearly something has gone electrically wrong with it, causing the PCB to dissipate far more heat that it should have, I suspect the cause might have been a broken solder joint causing the current sensing to not work and the LEDs to be massively overdriven.
The floodlight on the other hand I was extremely impressed with. The electrical design was impeccable, probably one of if not the best I’ve seen so far. It was let down by one major issue though, that being the complete lack of any thermal paste on the interface between the LED board and the casting that acts as its heat sink. Thermal paste is critical in an application like this as it allows for efficient transfer of heat energy by removing the air gap between the 2 surfaces. Other options are available, but they are usually very expensive and only for very specific purposes. Things like indium metal foil, liquid metal and graphite thermal pads are common, particularly in high-end industrial and commercial applications, things like server CPUs etc. Other specialised ones are designed for extreme environments, such as very high or low temperatures, like the thermal grease used in jet engines.
Overall I was very impressed with the driver in the floodlight, its power factor correction make it rather more complex than usual, and its dual rail output could be useful for some things. However as much as I like this driver it is not suitable for most projects due to it being not isolated, so the output is just as dangerous as the input, that being said the output being over 150v means the output, even if isolated is still dangerous.
As usual if you have any comments questions or suggestions drop them below and I’ll do my best to help, and thank-you very much for watching!
