Those colossal waves of arpeggios have to stay perfectly even and fluid at both extremes, from barely audible to full force, and for a long time I couldn't make them do that. It was only later that I learned how to handle it. You don't need to know anything about Ravel to feel this. Let it rock you like the boat in its title. Remastered. A small boat on the open sea: long swells of arpeggios, the surface always moving, and every so often a wave that lifts the whole texture before it settles again. Ravel was born in Ciboure, on the Basque coast, and this is the most orchestral of the five pieces in Miroirs; he later scored it for orchestra himself. It belongs to the same family of water music as Liszt's Jeux d'eau à la Villa d'Este and Debussy's Reflets dans l'eau. Music like this exists because a person meant something by it, and it can only be played the same way. Every note here is played by a person, and this remaster finally gives it the sound it always deserved.
