On July 8, 2026, Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer said Gary Siders Sr.'s medical care "would bankrupt Vinton County," the least populous county in Ohio, with 12,800 residents. His bond was changed so the county would not pay for his care. On October 6, Judge Laina Fetherolf Rogers dismissed all 16 counts against him without prejudice after he was found incompetent to stand trial. The case has strained the county's budget. Ohio approved $1 million in emergency funding for the 16 children's care. According to WSYX, the county's Child Care Levy Shortage Fund, which began the year with $600,000, was empty by the end of July. Christina Siders' attorneys are asking for $7,000 for a neuropsychological evaluation after her competency report found risk factors for dementia. Christina Siders, Gary Siders Jr., and Elizabeth Siders have pleaded not guilty and are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. The 16 children are in state custody.
