A long, slow history narration about what nighttime actually involved in a Victorian house — the hour that most accounts of the period skip over entirely. Bedwarming and banked fires, the real weight and cost of blankets, why the mattress had to be turned and by whom, what a chamber candlestick was for, how a household of ten people arranged themselves across four floors, and why almost nobody slept the uninterrupted eight hours we now assume they did. Reconstructed from household management manuals, servants' guides, furniture and drapery prices, and domestic accounts of the eighteen-seventies.
