The legal battle surrounding former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has taken another turn as the Court of Appeal sitting in Kaduna reserves judgment on his bail appeal. El-Rufai is challenging the Kaduna State High Court’s refusal to grant him bail in the case brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). During Tuesday’s proceedings, El-Rufai’s counsel, Paul Erokoro, SAN, urged the appellate court to grant bail, arguing that the offences against his client are bailable and that his continued detention is affecting his ability to properly prepare his defence. The ICPC, however, urged the Court of Appeal to dismiss the application, arguing that El-Rufai had previously filed three bail applications before the trial court and that all three were unsuccessful. After listening to arguments from both sides, the three-member panel led by Justice Onyekachi Otisi reserved judgment. The court did not fix a date for delivering its decision.
