Portugal spent decades getting close.
In 1966, Eusébio carried Portugal to their greatest World Cup finish. Then came years of heartbreak — missed World Cups, painful defeats, golden generations that couldn't finish the job, and France and Spain repeatedly standing in their way.
Then came a new generation.
Luís Figo. Rui Costa. João Pinto.
And eventually, Cristiano Ronaldo.
At Euro 2004, Portugal reached the final on home soil — only to lose to Greece.
At the 2006 World Cup, they reached the semi-final — and France stopped them again.
At Euro 2012, Spain ended their run on penalties.
At the 2014 World Cup, Germany crushed them 4–0.
Portugal had the talent.
They had the stars.
They had Ronaldo.
But the trophy kept slipping away.
Until Euro 2016.
In Paris, against France, Portugal finally broke the curse.
Éder's long-range strike in extra time gave Portugal their first major international trophy.
But the story didn't end there.
A Nations League title followed in 2019.
Another Nations League came in 2025.
And through it all, Cristiano Ronaldo continued to rewrite the record books.
From Eusébio to Figo.
From the Golden Generation to Ronaldo.
From endless heartbreak to European champions.
This is the story of Portugal — the small football nation that kept coming close.
And finally...
didn't.
