On New Year's Day 1968, both sides agreed to a truce in Vietnam. At Firebase Burt, a small artillery base near the Cambodian border, soldiers of the 25th Infantry Division read their Christmas mail. Hours before the ceasefire ended, two Viet Cong regiments came out of the jungle in human waves. What followed was one of the hardest nights of the war: mortars, bunkers overrun, cannons fired point-blank, and gunships overhead until dawn.
