In the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, JWST detected the same bright infrared emission line twice, 88 days apart, from a spot where no source is visible. Here are the four suspects, and why each one fails. We explain how a spectrograph reads light, how researchers found this by opening nearly every shutter on JWST's NIRSpec, why a single line cannot tell you the distance, and what follow-up would settle it.
