Abhirami Pattar was a devoted priest of the Goddess Abhirami at the Tirukkadaiyur temple. A king, hearing tales of Pattar's extraordinary devotion, challenged him to prove his spiritual insight.
Lost in his devotion to the Goddess, Pattar misperceived the lunar day and declared it was a full moon, when it was, in fact, a new moon.
Enraged by the perceived falsehood, the king ordered Pattar to be burned alive if the moon did not appear by nightfall.
To save himself, Pattar appealed to Goddess Abhirami, composing the Andadi (meaning "ending in the beginning"), a unique form of poetry where the last word or syllable of one verse begins the next.
On completing the 79th verse, Goddess Abhirami herself appeared. She threw her diamond earring into the sky, where it shone like a bright, full moon, illuminating the night.
The king, witnessing this divine act, realized his mistake, repented, and set Pattar free. The king bestowed upon Pattar the title "Abhirami Bhattar," meaning "Priest of Abhirami".
A Unique Poetic Form: The Andadi is a devotional work of 100 verses in the Tamil language.
An Andadi is a form of Tamil poetry where the last word of one verse becomes the first word of the next verse, creating a continuous chain from beginning to end. The term "Andadi" is derived from the Tamil words "antam" (the end) and "adi" (the beginning), literally meaning "end-beginning".
The composition of the Andadi is seen as a demonstration of Pattar's unwavering faith in the Goddess.
Reciting the Abhirami Andadi, especially on full moon or new moon days, is believed to bring blessings and make impossible dreams come true.
