🍗 Easy Homemade Chicken Biryani Recipe
Make delicious, aromatic chicken biryani at home with simple ingredients and traditional spices.
Ingredients:
500 g chicken, cut into pieces
2 cups basmati rice
2 medium onions, thinly sliced
2 tomatoes, chopped
½ cup plain yogurt
2 tablespoons ginger-garlic paste
2–3 green chilies
¼ cup cooking oil or ghee
1 teaspoon red chili powder
½ teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon coriander powder
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon garam masala or biryani masala
Whole spices: cinnamon, cardamom, cloves and bay leaf
Fresh mint and coriander leaves
Salt to taste
Lemon slices and fried onions for garnish
Water as needed
Method:
Step 1: Prepare the rice
Wash and soak the basmati rice for 20–30 minutes. Boil water with salt and a few whole spices. Cook the rice until it is about 70–80% done, then drain.
Step 2: Prepare the chicken masala
Heat oil or ghee in a pot. Add sliced onions and fry until golden brown. Add ginger-garlic paste, chicken, tomatoes, yogurt, green chilies, salt, and powdered spices. Cook until the chicken is tender and the masala becomes rich and flavorful.
Step 3: Layer the biryani
Spread the chicken masala evenly in a heavy-bottomed pot. Add the partially cooked rice on top. Sprinkle fresh mint, coriander, fried onions, and a little garam masala. Add a small amount of saffron milk or food color if desired.
Step 4: Steam on low heat
Cover the pot tightly and cook on low heat for approximately 15–20 minutes, or until the rice is fully cooked and the chicken reaches a safe internal temperature of 74°C (165°F).
Step 5: Serve and enjoy
Gently mix the layers and serve your homemade chicken biryani hot with raita, salad, or your favorite chutney. Enjoy a delicious family meal! 😋
💡 Tip: Avoid overcooking the rice before layering to help keep the biryani fluffy and prevent the grains from breaking.
