As Reality Capture becomes faster and more accurate, where does the real value begin: in the scan itself, or in what we can do with the data afterwards? At INTERGEO 2026, Renzo Carlucci, Editor-in-Chief of GEOmedia Magazine, talks with Oliver Zweigle, Divisional VP of Engineering at FARO INSIGHT, about the evolution from Reality Capture to trusted insights. Today’s technologies can capture the physical world with remarkable speed and accuracy. But according to Zweigle, for many applications we may already be approaching the point where capture performance is more than sufficient. The next challenge is therefore different: how can we reduce the time between capturing reality and obtaining information that can actually support a decision? A scan may take seconds or minutes, while registration, processing and integration can still require hours—or even days. Making this entire workflow faster could create more value than simply making the scanner itself faster. The same applies to accuracy. FARO’s latest technologies are moving towards sub-millimetre object accuracy, but the accuracy that really matters ultimately depends on the application. The conversation also looks at Artificial Intelligence and the future of surveying. For Zweigle, AI can become a powerful tool for surveyors, helping automate and accelerate everyday workflows—but professional knowledge remains essential. Because even the best AI can fail. “You still need to understand what you are doing.” For the next generation of surveyors, the opportunity may therefore lie in combining knowledge of the physical world with the capabilities of AI, rather than choosing between them. The evolution can be summarized as: Accurate Capture → Faster Processing → Trusted Insights → Better Decisions As Reality Capture approaches the immediacy of taking a photograph, the next frontier may increasingly be defined by what happens after the scan.
