“Chrome and Calvary” is a heartfelt Christian country-gospel song about broken things being restored, lives being redeemed, and the power of resurrection. Through the story of a struggling mother, her teenage daughter, and an old rusted-out Monte Carlo, the song turns rebuilding a forgotten car into a powerful picture of what God can do with a wounded life.
At the heart of the song is a simple message: people may judge you by your past, your mistakes, and your scars—but grace sees what you can become. Just as that old car is brought back from rust and darkness, a broken person can be given another beginning. The imagery of the cross and resurrection runs through the song, connecting three nails at Calvary with the hope that what looks finished can live again.
As the story moves forward, the daughter learns to rebuild engines while hearing about redeeming love in church. The words, “God rebuilds broken things,” become more than something she hears from a preacher—they become the story of her own life.
Years later, Mama is gone, but every Easter her daughter returns to the little church in the restored Monte Carlo. What was once rusted and dying now shines with candy-apple paint and chrome wheels, carrying both Mama’s memory and the testimony that resurrection still happens in human hearts.
“Chrome and Calvary” blends classic-car Americana, family, loss, faith, Calvary, and redemption into one story. It reminds us that when everyone else sees something too broken to save, God may still see something worth rebuilding.

CHROME AND CALVARY
Mama worked the late shift down at Miller’s Texaco
Wiped her hands on faded jeans, counted tips and prayed for snow
Daddy disappeared one winter in a blacked-out Chevrolet
Left us with a busted trailer and bills we couldn’t pay
I was sixteen, wild as gasoline
Hair teased high toward the sky
Mama said, “This world’ll eat you whole
If you don’t learn how to drive”
She pinned a silver cross on me
And pointed toward the yard
Where an old rusted-out Monte Carlo
Sat dying in the dark
She said—
“Take that car and make it run
Like the Lord rolled back the stone
People’ll judge you by your past
But grace can bring you home
Three nails couldn’t stop His love
And hard times won’t stop you
Sometimes resurrection looks
Like chrome shining brand new”
So I learned engines from old men
Down at Jackson’s Body Shop
Burned my fingers on hot headers
Worked till my knees would lock
Folks in town talked awful mean
Said I’d never rise above
But Sunday mornings in that church
I heard about redeeming love
Then one spring revival night
A preacher caught my eye
Said, “Child, God rebuilds broken things
He don’t just let ‘em die”
And Lord, those words hit hard
“Take that car and make it run
Like the Lord rolled back the stone
People’ll judge you by your scars
But heaven calls you home
The cross looked like a failure
Till resurrection proved the truth
Sometimes salvation sounds
Like a V8 coming through”
Now Mama’s buried on the hillside
By the white church off Route 4
And every Easter I pull up there
In that Monte Carlo door-to-door
Candy apple paint, chrome wheels
Engine loud as Sunday choir
And I swear I feel her smiling
Every time that motor fires
I took that car and made it run
Like the Lord walked from the grave
Took all the hurt this life handed me
And somehow I was saved
Three nails changed the whole wide world
And Mama changed mine too
Yeah resurrection lives in hearts
Everybody else gave up on
So if you see a woman flying fast
Down a backroad after dark
Singing hymns above a small-block roar
That’s just grace out making sparks.
