At sixty, the week your wife came home from the hospital after a stroke, you wrote a three sentence letter quitting your job to take care of her. You signed it and zipped it inside your work jacket, and it stayed there for eleven weeks.
This is the story of those eleven weeks and the three years after them: a hospital social worker who told you the one thing nobody at work had, a phone call about twelve weeks of job protected leave that kept your health insurance running, a pharmacy bag with the price of help written on it, and the night your wife took the green marker off the refrigerator and wrote one word on the whiteboard.
Your friend Russ quit the week his wife had heart surgery. He would do it again, he says, but he would do it smarter. On your last day at sixty three, your retirement plan held $340,725. On the road where you handed in the letter the first week, it would have held about $94,392, and run dry a little past sixty four.
If someone you love got sick tomorrow, who is the first person you would call, and what would you be tempted to sign that same week?
This is a fictional story used to illustrate ordinary money arithmetic. It is not financial, legal, tax, medical or benefits advice. The people, the company and every dollar figure are illustrative and hypothetical. Care costs use national median rates from the CareScout 2025 Cost of Care Survey (about $35 an hour for a home aide, $95 a day for adult day care); your area will differ. Investment figures assume five percent a year and a twelve percent tax on withdrawals, for illustration only. The Family and Medical Leave Act generally gives eligible employees of covered employers up to twelve weeks of unpaid, job protected leave a year to care for a spouse with a serious health condition, with group health coverage maintained; eligibility depends on employer size, length of service and hours worked, and state paid leave programs vary. Consult a qualified financial professional about your own situation.
