In this wide-ranging conversation, Lennon looks back on Beatlemania and ‪@TheBeatles‬, explaining why the group eventually became musically stale and discussing his relationships with his former bandmates. He talks about ‪@ringostarr‬'s solo success, the roots and continuing evolution of rock music, and his interest in reggae, which he describes as one of the most significant musical developments of the previous five years. Lennon also discusses his life with ‪@YokoOno‬, their Bed-In for Peace, the Two Virgins album cover, fame and the relative freedom he had found living in New York after the intensity of Beatlemania. A substantial part of the interview concerns Lennon’s battle to remain in the United States. His immigration attorney Leon Wildes joins the discussion to explain the deportation proceedings, Lennon’s earlier drug conviction in Britain and the legal fight over his application for permanent residence. Lennon explains why, despite the government’s attempts to deport him, he wanted to remain in America: it was where much of the music that had influenced his life originated, and New York had become the place he wanted to live.
