The open-rotor engine could revolutionize commercial aviation — but there's a massive problem standing in its way. Nearly 40 years after the technology was abandoned, CFM International, a joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran, is bringing it back through its revolutionary RISE program, promising more than 20% lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to today's most efficient jet engines.
Designed to power the next generation of commercial aircraft, the CFM RISE open-fan engine could transform aviation. Airbus is already preparing to test the technology on an Airbus A380 flying testbed, with potential entry into service in the mid-2030s.
But major challenges remain.
Unlike conventional turbofan engines, the open-rotor design features enormous exposed fan blades that cannot easily fit beneath existing aircraft like the Boeing 737 MAX or Airbus A320neo. Safety certification, engine noise, development costs and the need for entirely new aircraft could threaten its future.
Even CFM International has reportedly explored a backup conventional engine design in case the open-fan concept proves unworkable.
The biggest obstacle may not even be the engine itself.
Airbus and Boeing must decide whether to develop new aircraft around this technology, while airlines and aircraft leasing companies face significant financial risks.
This is the story of the open-rotor engine's comeback — and why its biggest problem could change the future of commercial aviation.
Do you think open-rotor engines will replace traditional jet engines, or will Airbus and Boeing stick with conventional turbofans? Comment below.
