£1.80 Into 7 Jars of Lime Marmalade – Food Initiative vs Supermarket Cost

I turned a surprise box of free limes into 7 jars of homemade lime marmalade – for under £2 in ingredients. APPROXIMATE UK SUPERMARKET COMPARISON: If you bought similar marmalade ready-made at a UK supermarket, you might pay: • £3.50–£5 per jar for “posh” lime or citrus marmalades • Even basic marmalade often £1–£2 a jar So instead of paying somewhere between £7–£14 (or more) for 7 jars, this batch cost me under £2 in ingredients – plus a bit of time in the kitchen.
