Doctors can freeze your belly fat... and some of it disappears for good. No surgery. No needles. Just cold. 🧊 Sounds too good to be true, so does it really work? And why doesn't your skin freeze first?

What we found:
🏋️ Crunches make your abs stronger, but they don't shrink the fat on top: six weeks of ab workouts, five days a week, left belly fat unchanged. You can't pick where you lose fat.
🍭 Clue #1, a popsicle. In 1970 doctors described "popsicle panniculitis": little kids got a red, hard lump in the fat of the cheek after sucking on ice pops, while the skin on top was fine.
🐴 Clue #2, horse riders. Young women who rode horses for hours every day through the winter got the same cold-injured lumps of fat on their outer thighs ("equestrian cold panniculitis"). Every clue said the same thing: cold hurts fat but leaves skin alone.
🐷 In 2008, scientists in Boston cooled small patches of skin on sleeping pigs to a few degrees below zero for 10 minutes. Over 3.5 months, several millimetres of fat under those patches disappeared, with no burns or scars.
🔢 The big difference from dieting: when you lose weight, fat cells shrink but don't disappear. Adults keep about the same number of fat cells, even after losing a lot of weight. Freezing actually removes some.
📉 How much? In one early study the fat layer was about 20% thinner after 2 months and 25% after 6. A 2015 review of 19 studies found drops of roughly 10 to 28%. It's for one stubborn bulge, not weight loss, and blood fats and liver tests stayed normal.
⚠️ The downsides: the spot can go numb for a few weeks, and rarely (about 1 in 455 people in a 2025 review) the fat grows bigger instead. Don't try it at home: a woman who used dry ice got frostbite that needed surgery.
