Lesson 58: Know You Have Eternal Life — 1 John 5:13–15
In Lesson 58, we study John’s purpose statement near the close of First John: believers can know they have eternal life. John writes to those who believe in the name of the Son of God so they may have settled assurance, not uncertainty, fear, or doubt. This lesson emphasizes that eternal life is possessed by faith alone in Christ alone, and that assurance rests on the finished work of Christ rather than personal performance, emotional memory, or human effort.
The lesson also addresses why many believers struggle with assurance, including confusion about sin, spiritual growth, doctrinal misunderstanding, and the mistaken idea that works must become the primary proof of salvation. John then connects assurance of eternal life with confidence in prayer. Because believers have a secure relationship with God through Christ, they can approach Him with boldness, asking according to His will and trusting that He hears them.
This study encourages believers to rest in the certainty of eternal life, grow in biblical understanding, and pray with humble confidence before God.
