Nuclear is the most proven sustainable option, and renewables alone can't meet the coming decades of demand. Today's fleet is 60% PWR and 21% BWR, with Generation III+ just arriving and a 2000-launched Gen IV Initiative pushing for safer, longer-lived, proliferation-resistant designs. Reactors are defined by coolant and neutron energy — thermal designs exploit U-235, fast designs convert abundant U-238. Six Gen IV concepts (SCWR, SFR, LFR, VHTR, GFR, MSR) will run hotter and harsher for 60+ years, while fuel containment comes in three architectures: clad rods, TRISO spheres, and molten-salt fuel itself. The big news is real: Vogtle 3 & 4 brought Gen III+ to America in 2023–24, TerraPower's Natrium broke ground in April 2026 with 1,600 workers, Kairos secured its HALEU fuel in January, and AI is compressing materials research from years to seconds — from irradiated-steel prediction to DuctGPT alloy design to digital twins.
