Clinical psychology and beyond: Different career routes in the NHS psychological workforce

If you're an undergraduate psychology student - thinking about your future career pathway - wanting to help people struggling with their mental health who present to the NHS, there are now more options than traditional clinical or counselling psychology alone. In this video, Miles Thompson is in conversation with UWE Bristol graduates: Paula Kusnierczak, Ellie Stone and Zoe Thomas. We discuss our journeys into the NHS psychological professions workforce, including both clinical psychology and NHS Talking Therapies (formerly IAPT). We introduce ourselves, our roles, our journeys, and the experiences of our peers. We chat about the usefulness of further academic qualifications, like undertaking a Master's. And discuss the enduring appeal of doctoral training in clinical psychology. Importantly, we talk about how the psychological workforce within the NHS is expanding and how there are different routes to delivering therapy and psychological interventions both with and without a psychology degree. Today there are new role titles such as: Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner, Educational Mental Health Practitioner, Children's Wellbeing Practitioner, Youth Intensive Psychological Practitioner and Mental Health and Wellbeing Practitioner... ...that sit alongside Clinical Associates in Psychology and more traditional roles like Assistant, Clinical and Counselling Psychologists.
