Why do school districts say they have given teachers AI guidance while fewer than 1 in 5 teachers agree? In this conversation, I talk with *Kyle Brumbaugh* about why that gap exists: districts often adopt boilerplate AI policies from their state school boards association without ever testing them in a classroom. Drawing on 35 years as a teacher and district tech director, Kyle explains why AI policy should work more like a compass than a rulebook, where AI can take administrative work off educators' plates, and why most districts can't yet use it to free up people and time because their data lives in systems that don't talk to each other. We talk about: Why districts adopt boilerplate AI policies and why teachers say a flyer is not guidance Why 39% of teachers turn to TikTok for ideas on using AI in the classroom Low-friction first steps for teachers: newsletters, translation, adjusting reading levels, and building study materials in NotebookLM How roughly 20% of a district's budget goes to administrative work, and why AI could help reallocate it toward students Why fragmented data and the lack of a single source of truth hold districts back An example of automating student account setup so new students don't wait days to get started Why efficiency AI comes first, and the question of who gets the time it saves This conversation is part of my ongoing series with people doing the practical work of figuring out how AI changes the way organizations operate. *About Kyle Brumbaugh* Kyle Brumbaugh is the Founder and Principal Consultant at Innovative Learning Design.
