Where have all the flowers gone…And the bees… the birds… the trees…The cities… and, if we are not careful… us.
There’s a book titled The World Without Us, by Alan Weisman. It asks a simple question: if we vanished overnight, what would remain—and what would return.
This song has been asking its own version of that question for a long time. “Where Have All the Flowers Gone” was written in 1955 by Pete Seeger, later shaped and carried forward by Joe Hickerson. It’s a folk song in the truest sense—plainspoken, circular, and patient.
