At the time of the murder, Meagan was involved in an affair with Christopher Dontell, a former Horry County deputy coroner. Prosecutors allege she killed Gregory, possibly due to custody disputes or to conceal her affair with Dontell. Jackson reportedly told Dontell she was pregnant with his child, raising fears their affair would be exposed, though no pregnancy was confirmed. Christopher Dontell, initially charged with murder, pleaded guilty on December 4, 2024, to accessory after the fact and criminal conspiracy to commit murder.
