Beyond the beaches, resorts and gleaming towers lies a Philippines many visitors never see. This documentary follows five places where the struggle for a home, a meal and a living reveals the human cost of inequality. At Manila North Cemetery, tombs serve as shelter and the care of the dead helps sustain the living. In Tondo, we explore pagpag—the recovery and recooking of food discarded by restaurants—and the informal economy that grows around it. Along the shoreline of Navotas, fishing communities face changing access to Manila Bay as reclamation reshapes the coast. On Negros, sugarcane workers navigate low pay, piece-rate work, debt and tiempo muerto, the quiet season between harvests. In Paracale, Camarines Norte, the search for gold brings us to the dangers of compressor mining, hazardous working conditions and child labour. These stories connect housing, food, land, water and work. Behind every polished skyline are people whose labour makes growth possible, yet who struggle to share in its benefits. The film looks at the choices families make under pressure, the livelihoods they build and the systems that shape those choices. Living Among the Dead: The Philippines Tourists Never See is a journey through survival and resilience, told with English narration by Below the Skyline.
