Most API vulnerabilities aren't code bugs — they're a gap between the question a machine can answer ("is this request authenticated?") and one it can't ("should this caller be allowed to touch this object?"). That gap is Broken Object Level Authorization (BOLA) — and it's the reason automated scanners keep signing off on APIs that then get breached. This is why API security can't be outsourced to a tool or bolted on by a security team at the end. Object-level authorization is structurally invisible to anything that only reads requests and responses. It has to be designed in by the people writing the endpoints. So instead of memorising the OWASP API Security Top 10 as ten unrelated items, this video runs it through four questions every endpoint must answer — and shows why common frameworks only handle two of them. Then we look at four incidents where the missing authorization layer was the whole story: Optus, T-Mobile, Dell, and the Salesloft Drift OAuth token compromise — including what the ACMA and OAIC proceedings, T-Mobile's own customer notice, and FINRA and Arctic Wolf reporting actually found. Finally, eight practices developers can apply immediately — starting with the one test almost nobody writes. In this video: • Why API security is a developer responsibility, not a purchase order • Authentication vs authorization — and why only frameworks that ask both questions survive contact with real attackers • The four-question model that makes the OWASP API Security Top 10 finally make sense • Broken object level authorization (BOLA) and broken access control, explained through real breach paths • Shadow APIs — the endpoints nobody remembers deploying • The Salesloft Drift OAuth token compromise and what it reveals about third-party trust • Eight concrete API security practices you can implement this week • How this connects to API pentesting, bug bounty work, and the API security testing roles hiring right nowSources • OWASP API Security Top 10 (2023) • OWASP Top 10:2025 • ACMA and OAIC proceedings • T-Mobile customer breach notice • FINRA / Arctic Wolf reporting on Salesloft Drift • Cloudflare and Akamai vendor research Disclaimer: This video is intended for educational purposes only.
